Restorative Justice

RJ-2

The Town of Nederland was awarded a grant to contract with TEENS, Inc. to bring restorative justice practices to the Peak to Peak Region.  When a crime or wrongdoing occurs, restorative justice focuses on repairing the harm and mending the offender’s bond with the community.  TEENS, Inc. has been implementing restorative justice practices for 10 years to address youth problem behaviors and we are now partnering with Nederland local schools, the Nederland Police Department and Nederland municipal court to develop these practices in the Peak to Peak Region.  A restorative approach has been found to be much more effective at reducing recidivism then the traditional punishment based approaches we often see in courts and schools.  This approach allows teens to learn from their experiences, and develop important life skills while being engaged and included in the process.  Working restoratively with youth in our schools and criminal justice system will help our areas youth and our community develop greater connections and relationships, grow and thrive.
